History

Sugarloaf 2020 is about the future, but is firmly based in the incredible and storied history of the mountain. The legacy and values handed down by the pioneers who cut the first trails have shaped the past 60 years of Sugarloaf's history, and Sugarloaf 2020 ensures that they will continue to influence Sugarloaf throughout the next decade.
60 Years of Premier Skiing
Since the first trail was cut and Sugarloaf debuted to skiers in 1951, the mountain has been home to some of the most unique, challenging, and memorable terrain in the East. From the early days of hiking to reach the snowfields, to the days of the gondola and the World Cup, Sugarloaf has always been about skiing first, and everything else second.
Terrain at Sugarloaf is unparalleled anywhere in the east. As lifelong Sugarloafer Peter Webber has stated, "If God were to build a ski mountain, it would look just like Sugarloaf - triangular, north-facing, with the steepest terrain at the top, gentler slopes at the bottom, and snowfields for above treeline adventures." Sugarloaf is a one-of-a-kind, true skiers' mountain, and from day one the focus of the mountain's developers has been to create the best ski experience possible.
60 Years of Sugarloafers
When Amos Winter and the Bigelow Boys set their sights on Sugarloaf more than 60 years ago, they were creating more than a ski area. They were creating a culture. A culture of loyal, passionate winter-sports enthusiasts whose devotion to skiing and to the mountain united them. They were creating the Sugarloafer.
Sugarloafers love their mountain with a passion. They identify with it and with others who share in their obsession. They spread the gospel of Sugarloaf to every corner of the globe. Photos of Sugarloaf stickers have been taken on every continent on Earth, including Antarctica. Over the years it has been the Sugarloafer culture, as much as the mountain itself, that has created the mystique that surrounds Sugarloaf.
