Guiding Principles

Sugarloaf has soul — an authentic, “only-found-here” character that Sugarloafers relish. As stewards of this unique place, we must protect its essence and keep the organization healthy. We’ll look for opportunities that support the spirit and culture of the mountain and the people who love this place. Sugarloaf is the bellwether of New England skiing and we plan to keep it that way.
The outlining of Sugarloaf's Extraordinary Qualities led to a set of four Guiding Priniciples. These principles are the self-imposed rules of future decision making, which will help to ensure that, no matter what project we undertake, Sugarloaf's soul remains unchanged.
- The Sugarloaf experience is authentic and unique
The Sugarloaf experience is genuine—not a Disneyesque fabrication. It has developed organically over decades—formed and defined by the unique character of those who have been drawn to ski and ride this awe-inspiring peak. As stewards of this culture we look for ways to amplify a truly great and singular experience, not to redefine it.
- Sugarloaf is a skier’s mountain
Sugarloaf began as a skier’s dream. The first trails were cut by passionate skiers for passionate skiers. The Mountain’s scale and difficulty has rewarded the most accomplished skiers with a stellar skiing experience for over 60 years. Capital and planning are focused on continuing this tradition. Enhancing the winter on-snow experience is the primary goal. Energy will be devoted to all four seasons, but at its heart, Sugarloaf is—and always will be—a skier’s mountain.
- “Sugarloafer” culture is core to the experience
The Sugarloaf mystique is created by winter enthusiasts who consider the Mountain their winter home. They are initially drawn by the dramatic triangular shape with its awesome vertical drop and raw beauty, and then fall in love with the vibe. A low-profile acceptance of all who care to join the party. Titan of industry, boatbuilder, student or retiree—all are welcome to rub shoulders in the Village and swap tales at their favorite venue. Respecting the culture and fostering the camaraderie is a goal. Creating amenities and focussing development on the core Village experience is primary. We look for ways to help guests congregate, connect and create memories—we are in the business of creating Sugarloafers.
- We are investing for long-term sustainability
As stewards of a venerable brand, our investments must enhance long-term sustainability. Sustainable as a community, environmentally and as a business. We will invest based on a depth of experience in creating successful resorts, sound return-on-investment modeling and assessing what will have the greatest experiential value to our guests.
